Why Osian Deserves a Place on Your Rajasthan Itinerary

Most tourists visiting Rajasthan for the first time generally have the same itinerary - Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Udaipur. Rarely is Osian part of the plan and for that reason this itinerary should include Osian. Osian luxury heritage desert travel has a unique meaning here; it refers to a small town located in the eastern edge of the Thar, whose temples were built more than a thousand years ago while surrounded by dunes. At night one can dine at candlelight in front of a sky full of stars.

Locally Osian is referred to as the "Khajuraho of the Thar". Sometimes visitors liken Osian ruins to Hampi. However none of these two references do justice to the place. The town was a flourishing trade and pilgrimage center between the 8th and 12th centuries and the temples left from that period are now considered one of the few intact remains of the early medieval western India. Together with the silence of the desert and some luxurious camps recently opened here, Osian provides one of the most authentic short trips from Jodhpur.

A Short History: From Ukesha to the Oswals

The first known name of Osian, Ukesha or Upkeshapur, suggests that the town was an important place for both religion and business at that time, under the rule of the Gurjara-Pratihara Dynasty, which ruled large parts of northern and western India from the 8th to the 10th century AD. The town is believed to have been founded by a prince from the Pratihara family named Utpaladeva.

The most famous building in Osian, the Mahavira Jain Temple, was built in 783 according to a legend about its origin and is traditionally dated to the reign of the Pratihara king Vatsaraja, making it the oldest Jain temple in western India. There is also a mention of the town in the inscription of 953 located in the temple and saying that Osian was full of temples belonging to various communities, which is indeed true.

Osian is also the home of the Oswal caste, one of the most influential Indian merchant families. In their own language, "Oswal" means "people of Osian". Jain mythology states that the monk Ratnaprabhasuri preached among the townspeople and gave the name of the goddess Sachiya to the goddess who protected Osian. The Oswals all over the world come to

Luxury Desert Experiences in Osian

This is where the heritage narrative comes together with the luxury narrative. The dunes of Osian are not as grand as those of Sam in Jaisalmer. But they offer something much more important in the way of being close to stone and having an easy introduction to the desert landscape.

Where to Stay: Luxury Desert Camps and Heritage Hotels

There are many luxurious accommodations in and around Osian that include Swiss tents with in-suite bathrooms, tented camps, and heritage resorts surrounded by forts. A number of these accommodations are located just a few kilometres away from the temples and a few even further down on the road from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer. There are wide variations in quality, which is why we:

  • • Correct bedding, hot water and air-conditioning/insulation of tents during the summer.
  • • Vegetarian-friendly food and candle-lit dinner.
  • • Management that is women friendly, safe grounds and safari policy.
  • • Proximity to temples, because proximity allows you to visit them early in the morning when no one else has gone there.
  • • For palace-style luxury, stay at a heritage hotel in Jodhpur and take a day excursion to Osian - a pattern many couples prefer, spending one day in the desert and the rest in the city.
Camel and Jeep Safaris at Sunset

The traditional Osian activity is an afternoon camel ride into the scrub desert to finish just before sunset. The jeep version is more active. Settle the details upfront, preferably with your guide or driver, so that there are no misunderstandings.

The ultimate luxury experience comes when all you want is simplicity: a dinner table set up in the sands under lanterns, surrounded by a few Rajasthani musicians. A quality camp should be able to set this up for you without any pressure of entertainment.

Village and Craft Experiences

Cultural interactions in rural villages around Osian that include weaving, leather making, and pottery provide for a soft introduction into the local culture. You will be able to interact with the artisans at home rather than in a showroom if you have a good guide.

Reading the Stone: Pratihara Architecture

Osian acts like a real-life class on early Gurjara-Pratihara temple architecture. Temples have raised platforms, entrance porch leading to the shrine, and above all, they have a tiered tower with ribbed and gooseberry-shaped amalaka. The wall decoration of the temples is in bands, where gods in niches, dancing maidens at corners, and mythological stories in between.

  • • Go through the plinths. Their heights distinguish the shrines from the village and reflect their well-planned nature.
  • • Pay attention to the niches. The images of different manifestations of Vishnu, Shiva, and the guardians have been carved according to certain iconographical conventions.
  • • Look up in the shrines. The decorative ceilings and pillar brackets exemplify the best carvings, especially those in Jain shrines.
  • • Look at the pillars. The motif of the vessel overflowing with plenty is found on the pillars of the Sun Temple.
  • • Scholars view Osian's temples as crucial evidence of the Maru-Gurjara style's evolution - a language that later blossomed at Mount Abu and Ranakpur. This context enriches every future temple visit across Rajasthan.

One Town, Two Faiths: Cultural Significance

Osian’s uniqueness lies not in having just one religion, but in how multiple religions coexist in the same space. The worshipping of Jainism and Hinduism takes place on the same hilltop, sharing the same goddess and community. The temple of Sachiya Mata is decorated with architectural styles of Jainism but worships a goddess known among various religions. For the tourist, this temple provides an opportunity to understand the complex layers of religious practice in Rajasthan beyond what can be found in the guides. One must visit in the morning to witness families coming with their offerings.

Hidden Gems Most Visitors Miss

  • • The southern temple complex at dawn. Quiet and dimly lit, and the best location for photography.
  • • Katan Baori. Get your guide to show you around to appreciate the geometric elegance of the step-well.
  • • View from Sachiya Mata hill. Be there early to experience the awakening of the town below you.
  • • Lanes of the village leading to the temples. A few minutes of walking will take you through the houses with the carvings on the pillars.
  • • Monsoon Osian. During the months of July to September the desert transforms into an oasis around the temples.

What to Eat

Desert food is all about innovation - built from dried beans, lentils, millet, and ghee. Expect dal baati churma, bajra roti with garlic chutney, ker sangri (a desert dish of beans and berries), and gatte ki sabzi.

Thanks to Osian's rich Jain community, many restaurants and camps serve vegetarian fare, and Jain food without onion or garlic can be arranged in advance.

Employ a driver and a guide who has in-depth knowledge of the visits, decide on camping only for a single night instead of cramming the day itineraries, and plan the temple visits in early morning. For newly married couples, book a private sunset dinner at the dunes and in a tent stationed away from the hubbub of events.
